Not all fabrics are created equal when it comes to odor retention and care. Fabric sensitivity is the often-overlooked factor that determines why some smells persist despite washing, while others vanish easily.

2.1 Natural Fibers: Wool and Down

Wool is naturally absorbent and can hold moisture, which, while great for warmth, is a magnet for odors. Harsh detergents or high heat can damage its delicate fibers, stripping natural lanolin and causing the fabric to become brittle, which ironically can make it hold smells more over time. Down insulation loses its loft and clumps when improperly cleaned, trapping odors within the clusters.

2.2 Technical and Synthetic Fabrics

Many modern coats feature waterproof membranes or synthetic insulation. These materials can react with salts in sweat or certain cleaning chemicals, leading to a persistent, sour smell that standard detergents can’t break down. The technical coatings themselves can be degraded by improper cleaners.

The key is that the wrong cleaning method can set odors permanently.
